Work Day and Housekeeping

5/1/2011

Thanks to everyone who showed up for the work day today! Even with the poor weather, we were able to accomplish a few essential tasks. The signs from the old Little League have been moved to the dugout, along with the hardware cloth. Shelves inside the shed have been labeled for personal items and free items available for the taking. Thanks to Dan Trail and Maria Byford for pressure washing the shed so we can paint it next time we have some good weather. And thanks to those who raked the paint chips up. Also, thank you to the compost committee for shifting through the bins to find us some black gold. Looks good!

There is still plenty to be done out at the site, though. If you are interested in working on the site committee, contact Bob, or just look at the "To Do" list hanging on the bulletin board on the west side of the building (once it has been painted). Remember to sign off on the task, along with the date you accomplished it.

Remember, if you have questions about the site, check out the Site Instructions and Bed Maps at the Garden Site Information page.
The minutes from our first spring member meeting are up here and the latest rules and regulations are here. Watch for the next announced work day and member meeting. See you all out there!

It may be in the single digits lately here in Wrangell, but it is now March and time to start thinking about the upcoming gardening season. We have a couple of announcements to start off the season:

-Maria Byford has accepted the vacant board member seat. Maria is committed to the community garden.  She stays in constant contact, shares ideas, helps-out at site work parties, has a wealth of knowledge, and she has an continued interest in being part of this community project. Congratulations to Maria!
-Renewing bed members have an extension until March 5th to submit a renewal application. Otherwise the bed will be reassigned to new member applications.
-A limited number of new applications will be accepted starting April 2nd at the Wrangell Health Fair, 10 am to 2 pm at the Nolan Center. Please visit our booth early on to get in your application. Applications can be found here.
-Watch for upcoming meetings!

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us and we look forward to seeing everyone out there as we start our second year as Wrangell's Community Garden!

Site Information for the Winter

11/11/2010

The site manager says a few words on the Work Day  success and cover the bases for winter use of the garden site:
"Thank you very much to the following folks who came out yesterday and braved the nicer than expected day to get the garden ready for the winter.  Thanks to Cindy Martin, Cindy Sweat, Vivian Mork, Maria and Bill Biford, Maria Burke, Ruby McMurren, Catherine Ivy, Angie Eldred, Britta Schroeder, Dan Trail, Kris Reed, Dave Butler and Melati Kaye.

A special thank you goes to Maria, Britta, Catherine, Ruby, Angie, Vivian, and both Cindys for tackling the odiferous task of taking down all of the compost towers and moving all of the compost inside the fence into the bin and for cleaning up all of the bags of shredded paper and grass clippings.  The site looks much better overall and your efforts will be appreciated by everyone.

All of the beds but one or two have been put to bed and covered with horse manure and seaweed.  Another special thanks to Bill and Maria for making the trips out to Kitty's for the manure and to Dave, Cindy Sweat, and Melati for helping me with the truckloads of seaweed.

Both hoses have been drained, pulled and stored in the shed and the water will be turned off for the winter later this week unless there is a special request to postpone until a later time.

To those at the workday who were interested in the scrap wood as firewood, just a reminder to you that it is there.

Please spread the word to folks who bring compost to the garden to now put it into the wooden bin in any of the three sections.  I will be putting covers on the compost in the near future but they will be available for use all winter.

Thanks to all of you who gardened this year and participated in the garden in some way.  The first year went well and should only get better next year.  Thank you all for being responsible gardeners and for working so well with each other to keep this community effort going.

Have a good winter and see you out there in the spring!"

At the September 26 meeting, the Wrangell Community Board approved a new set of rules and regulations. One of the most significant changes was that plot renters are no longer restricted from selling the items grown in their garden. Other changes include overwintering and returning renters information along with the latest application deadlines. For the latest copy of the rules and regulations, click here.

Thanks again to all those who helped make the Harvest Fair a great event! Here are the results of the Wrangell Harvest Fair, as quoted from the Wrangell Sentinel (Thanks to Kris Reed, Ryan Long and Beth Comstock):

"The Wrangell Harvest Fair was held last weekend and drew 40
Wrangellites and a slew of participants bringing in their best soups,
produce and baked goods.
Highlights of the Fair included the first showing of produce from
Wrangell’s new community garden, cut flowers from gardens around town and out the road and the annual Harvest Awards.
Taking Best in Show was Sharon Gillespie’s Begonia Flower Arrangement and Biggest Delphinium stalk.
Max Voltz won the Oddball prize with a double carrot.
Melissa Cady won the Most Colorful award for her produce arrangement.
Emily Cox conquered the judges’ pallets with the Best Soup award-
winning ‘Drunken Potato Soup’.
The 2010 iteration of the Harvest Fair built on the success of the
2009 inaugural year."

Join us for our 2nd Annual Wrangell Community Garden Harvest Fair, this Saturday, August 28th from 10 am to 2pm at the Wrangell High School commons.

All proceeds will go towards furthering the Wrangell Community Garden efforts.

Starting before 10 am, kind-hearted individuals are encouraged to donate vegetables, fruits, baked goods, foraged/gathered items that will be available for others to purchase through donations. All these items will be submitted for the "Best of __" judging, with categories including: "Biggest", "Most Colorful", "Oddball", and "Best in Show". Remember to bring a bag for the goodies you take away with you.

A soup and stew contest will begin judging at 11 am with a surprise Wrangell celebrity panel, and all soups/stews entered will be served to the public beginning at noon. To submit a soup/stew, arrive with serving utensil and soup/stew before 11 am. To enjoy the bounty of the soups/stews, bring your own eating container and receive unlimited refills for $2, or purchase a container for $3 at the event.

Booths will abound at the event with a little bit of everything:
A Kids' Corner booth will be set up to keep the little ones entertained while teaching them about harvesting.
Expect a Wrangell Community Garden booth with slideshows from our past year, information on how to garden in Southeast Alaska and how to apply for a garden next year.
Traditional foods booth will exhibit how to forage/gather/hunt for your harvest year round.

Open Board Seat and Meeting Venue Changes

7/3/2010

Regrettably, the WCG Board lost one of our Board members, Sylvia Geraghty, due to her relocation to Juneau.  So...we need to fill an open Board seat.  We wish to first approach our garden members and ask if there is one of you would enjoy serving on this Board?  We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about "actively" growing this grass roots organization.  As a Board member, it is expected that you would attend scheduled meetings, serve on committees, volunteer in a variety of garden building events, and advocate for a viable local foods community.   If the garden board interests you, please send Amber Al-Haddad your letter of interest prior to our next meeting, scheduled for Sunday, July 18th.  The letter does not need to be formal, but should express why you are interested in serving on the Board.

The Wrangell Community Garden (WCG) held our monthly meeting on Sunday, June 20th.  The last few scheduled meeting days have seen the skies filled with bright blue color and a bright ball of warmth, so we decided that the next time we're in need of a little sunshine, we'll should schedule a garden meeting!  In light of this trend, we agreed that if the sun is shining during any of our future garden meetings, the meeting spot will automatically move to the garden site.  This change is noted in the June 2010 meeting minutes.

We are now connected through Facebook, a social networking site online that provides people with an opportunity to become "fans" of our organization and show their support of us to their friends. This will hopefully allow us to connect with more people within the Wrangell Community and abroad. Fans of our page will also be able to comment and post pictures within Facebook that may not be viewable on our website here. To check out our Facebook page, you need to create a free Facebook profile at www.facebook.com. I promise that all pertinent information regarding events and site information will continue to be posted on this website, www.wrangellcommunitygarden.com for those who do not have Facebook access.

New photos have also been added to this site, as some of you may notice, and the Photo link has changed looks slightly, but the content is still there. Next to come will be minutes and agendas, bylaws and garden site information. Are we missing anything? Leave a comment below. And remember that you can keep your finger on the pulse of the garden through our RSS feed on the righthand column.
